New Works | Eric Wolske
September 17th - November 1st 2025
Gallery Lulo presents “New Paintings”, the third solo exhibit by Eric Wolske at Gallery Lulo. We are proud to announce that Eric Wolske is a recipient of a 2025 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Artist Grant. This prestigious grant is given out to a very limited number of artists each year.
The new paintings being shown at Gallery Lulo were all created in 2025 and a direct result of receiving this grant. The exhibit consists of 5 oil on canvas paintings each measuring 36x48 inches.
Eric Wolske is an artist who uses oil paint and a variety of pigment-based drawing and calligraphy inks on paper and canvas to explore written language and handwriting. Wolske takes his inspiration from cryptography, asemic writing, calligraphy, graffiti and code. The layering and juxtaposition of his wordless constructions create new combinations and residues of written abstractions. Eric`s paintings represent a poetic and lyrical form of art and a language of curiosity and immersion. His unique palette is deeply engaging for the viewer with the ceaseless uncovering of detail through marks and layering, while impressive in the harmonious and balanced nature of the expression. In this new body of work Eric furthers his source of inspiration within handwriting with expanded abstraction and association.
In his own words Eric talks of the recent body of work; I am deeply honored to have received a 2025 Pollock Krasner Foundation Artists grant. The paintings on view at Gallery Lulo are a direct result of this grant. The paintings continue my exploration using handwriting as a way to create an image. Currently I see the work stretching beyond this interpretation of writing, a slow creep towards a mainly visual event. This way of working was evident in previous works such as “Iceblink”. What’s similar is a cacophony of marks that fill in and bound themselves to each other yet still manage to dissolve and reappear. Most of the time I view these as fields of light rather than handwriting. Which I find odd because they are constructed and made from the act of my writing. The addition of dots of paint or as I like to call them, points add to a sense of looking or mapping the field. These points reference my interest in deep sky astrophotography, a phenomenal aspect of technology that is totally incompatible with my painting. Still I find the vastness depicted in these photos akin to what I am doing. A cosmic expansive quality that reveals things I cannot see with infinite complexity. A point can contain a billion stars.
Born in Ohio and based in Sonoma County, Wolske attended Yale Summer School of Art and Music and received his BFA from Indiana University and MFA from Hunter College in New York City. Eric Wolske is a 2024-2025 grant recipient of the Pollock-Krasner foundation.
