Near and Far | New Works by Julia Turner

Julia’s newest collection for Gallery Lulo brings sculptures, works on paper, and jewelry together on the gallery wall.

Julia Turner’s work is driven by a continuous exploration of materials and techniques from diverse disciplines. Her studio tables are piled with small experiments in form and surface which she combines and re-combines, finding tensions, engineering connections, moving ideas forward and developing the strongest impulses into finished work. Trained in both goldsmithing and art, Julia builds meticulous bridges between the precious and non-precious, drawing on centuries-old traditions of jewelry making while intentionally elevating materials rarely thought of as valuable. Her work reflects a fascination with the boundary between the human-built and natural worlds, the beauty of accidental collaborations between them, and our often funny ideas about what we can and can’t control.

Bio:

Julia Turner’s work has been exhibited internationally and has been included in numerous books and publications, most recently Nicolas Estrada’s book New Bracelets. She has taught at the California College of the Arts, the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts and Penland School of Craft. Julia has been a participant in many international programs such as the Jakob Bengel Artist in Residence program in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, the Turnov Jewelry Symposium in Turnov, Czech Republic, and FLY NOW in Ravenstein, the Netherlands, with Ruudt Peters. Recent exhibitions include her solo Exhibition “TIMBER” at Velvet Da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco and the exhibition “La Frontera” At the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.  Her studio is currently a part of the Heath Collective and occupies a unique industrial space in San Francisco’s Mission District. Julia Received her M.F.A. in 1995.
